Open-to-Buy Without the Fog
A practical way to present open-to-buy so category managers leave the room knowing what they may still commit.
Open-to-buy meetings often fail for a simple reason: everyone sees a different version of remaining dollars. One person works from a weekly export, another from a handwritten note after a vendor lunch, and the category manager is left to reconcile them in real time.
We prefer a single visual pack issued forty-eight hours before the session. It shows committed dollars, receipted goods not yet on floor, planned promotions that will pull inventory, and a clear residual for new commitments.
The pack does not invent precision. Where figures are soft, we mark them as estimates and name the owner who will firm them up. That honesty shortens debate more than another decimal place ever does.
When the residual is small, the meeting becomes a prioritization exercise rather than a hunt for missing money. That is the point of the visual: not decoration, but shared footing.
