When Markdown Calendars Collide with Floor Capacity
Markdown timing is not only a margin question — it is also a question of how much fixture space remains for full-price goods.
A markdown calendar drafted in isolation from floor plans tends to create congestion. Deep discounts arrive while new receipts are still landing, and the sales floor becomes a compromise of overlapping stories.
We ask planners to overlay three timelines: planned receipts, promotional windows, and fixture capacity by zone. The places where all three overlap are where markdown timing usually needs to move earlier or later.
In one Bangkok lifestyle chain we supported, shifting a soft-home markdown two weeks earlier freed adjacency for the incoming seasonal color story — and reduced the volume that later required a steeper cut.
Treat capacity as a constraint equal to margin. The calendar that respects both tends to look less aggressive on paper and calmer on the floor.
